The History of the California Burrito: How a San Diego Classic Became a Culinary Icon

Few menu items inspire as much West Coast devotion as the California Burrito

A larger-than-life creation wrapped in a warm flour tortilla and filled with everything that defines the SoCal experience. To be considered the true California burrito standard, it must include marinated carne asada, guacamole, pico de gallo, cheese, sour cream, french fries, and a flour tortilla. No rice. No beans. Just pure California flavor.

But how did this legendary burrito come to be?
The story stretches back to surf culture, late-night taco shops, and a spark of culinary rebellion.

San Diego in the Early 1980s: The Birthplace of a Legend

The California burrito traces its roots to San Diego, widely regarded as its true birthplace. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Mexican fast-casual shops were exploding in popularity across neighborhoods like Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, and Ocean Beach areas heavily influenced by surf and skate culture.

Two iconic taco shops often linked to the rise of the California burrito include:

Roberto’s Taco Shop
Santana’s Mexican Food (later Fresh MXN)

While no single restaurant can claim official ownership, these shops helped popularize the signature combination that would define the California burrito for decades to come.

As waves of hungry surfers and students poured in looking for something hearty, fast, and satisfying, the modern California burrito took shape.

The French Fry Revolution

If there is one ingredient that set the California burrito apart from everything that came before it, it’s the french fries.

This wasn’t a gimmick it was a brilliant answer to the needs of the local crowd. Surfers wanted something big and filling after hours in the ocean. College kids wanted value and comfort.

French fries delivered:

Carne Asada: The Heart of the Burrito

What makes the California burrito truly unforgettable is the use of marinated carne asada usually citrus-based, garlic-forward, and grilled over high heat until smoky and tender.

This reflects San Diego’s deep connection to Baja California, where carne asada is central to the region’s culinary identity. The juicy, savory steak became the perfect anchor for the fry-filled burrito.

It also inspired another beloved San Diego invention: carne asada fries.
Clearly, the city was on a roll.

The Flavor Equation Everyone Fell in Love With

The California burrito’s genius lies in its balance:

It is indulgent but refreshing, familiar but groundbreaking a perfect representation of Southern California’s fusion spirit.

How the California Burrito Conquered the West Coast

By the late 1990s and into the early 2000s, the burrito began migrating north. As students left San Diego for schools like UC Irvine, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, and beyond, they brought their cravings with them.

Independent Mexican restaurants adopted the style, San Diego taco shops expanded, and soon the California burrito became synonymous with SoCal-style Mexican food.

Yet, ask anyone loyal to the original, and they’ll tell you:

The best California burrito is still in San Diego.

It’s messy, fun, comforting, and unforgettable everything California is known for.

From its humble beginnings in San Diego taco shops to its status as a West Coast legend, the California burrito has become a symbol of culinary creativity and cultural identity. It’s bold, indulgent, and a little rebellious just like the state it represents.

Why Taco Tuesday Matters: The Weekly Tradition That Brings America Together

    By Pamela Waitt

You can eat tacos any day of the week just like you can enjoy eggs Benedict or mimosas on a random Wednesday, but there’s something undeniably special about Taco Tuesday and Sunday brunch. They transform an ordinary meal into a fun ritual, Taco Tuesday elevates tacos into a weekly celebration. It’s a pause in the week that brings people together.

A Ritual That Breaks the Routine

Most days blur into one another, but Taco Tuesday stands out. It’s a midweek spark an appointment with happiness. While tacos taste great on Friday night or during a Saturday binge watching marathon, Taco Tuesday gives people permission to slow down, enjoy something delicious, and connect with friends or family.

Much like Sunday brunch resets the mood for the week ahead, Taco Tuesday resets the mood for the week you’re in. It’s that little celebration that reminds everyone that life should be enjoyed.

The Social Power of a Shared Tradition

Humans love rituals; they bond us, ground us, and give us a sense of belonging. Taco Tuesday is one of the rare weekly traditions that transcends age, culture, and geography. Kids adore it. College students embrace it. Families rely on it. Restaurants thrive because of it.

Even people who don’t normally dine out make an exception for Taco Tuesday because the ritual itself is half the fun.

And just like Sunday brunch, Taco Tuesday has become a cultural anchor, a moment people anticipate and plan around. It’s not just about food…it’s about community.

A Weekly Permission Slip for Happiness

Everyday tacos are marvelous, but they’re a meal. Taco Tuesday tacos are an experience.

Restaurants create specials; families get creative in the kitchen, and people feel encouraged to try something new. Whether it’s crispy chicken tacos or adventurous Korean shrimp tempura tacos, the day invites excitement.

Just like brunch gives people a reason to order champagne at 11 a.m., Taco Tuesday gives people a reason to treat themselves in the middle of the week.

    Economy Meets Celebration

For restaurants, Taco Tuesday isn’t just a tradition, it’s an economic driver. It fills dining rooms on an otherwise quiet night. It inspires innovation in menus. It creates jobs, supports small businesses, and fuels local food culture.

For consumers, it’s an affordable joy. A weekly celebration that doesn’t break the bank.
This combination of accessibility + excitement is rare… and powerful.

A Tradition That Feels Like Home

Ask anyone where they’d like to go on a random Tuesday and there’s a good chance they’ll say: “Let’s get tacos.”

    It’s dependable. It’s comforting. It’s fun.

And just like Sunday brunch traditions passed down through generations, Taco Tuesday now belongs to American culture, woven into its weekly rhythm. Everyone knows what Taco Tuesday means even if they don’t celebrate it every week.

It’s a tradition created by the people, loved by the people, and shared by the people.

Tuesday may be early in the week, but Taco Tuesday makes it feel like a celebration.

And that’s why Taco Tuesday matters.

Tacodeli: The Austin Taquería That Changed the Taco Game

    By Astra
How a hometown favorite became one of America’s most influential modern taco shops.

Austin has no shortage of tacos they’re practically part of the city’s DNA but there’s one taquería that managed to rise above the noise, win hearts, and redefine what a modern taco shop could be: Tacodeli.

Founded in 1999, long before Austin was the foodie capital it is today, Tacodeli has built a cult-like following around handcrafted tacos made with care, creativity, and seriously good ingredients. Whether you’re an early-morning breakfast taco fan or a lunchtime taco hunter, Tacodeli has become a signature part of the Austin experience.

This is the story of the taco spot that helped shape a city and continues to influence how America eats tacos today.

From a Tiny Austin Taquería to a Modern-Day Classic

Tacodeli started with a simple idea:
Make tacos by hand, make them with heart, and never compromise on ingredients.

While many taquerías in the late ’90s focused on quick-service fare, Tacodeli leaned into freshness, sourcing quality meats, vegetables, and local ingredients long before “farm-to-taco” was trendy. They were early pioneers of:

And it worked. Word spread. Lines grew. The city claimed Tacodeli as one of its own a taco shop reflecting Austin’s personality: creative, friendly, and always down for a good breakfast taco.

The Breakfast Tacos That Made Them Famous

If you ask any Austin local where to get a breakfast taco, Tacodeli is almost guaranteed to be on the list.

Their breakfast menu is legendary because it hits every style:
fluffy eggs, smoked meats, sautéed veggies, melty cheese, and fresh tortillas.

    Standout favorites include:

Tacodeli understands what Austin loves: breakfast tacos that feel comforting, familiar, and a little indulgent – exactly the kind of start locals swear by.

    Lunch Tacos With Global Flair

While the breakfast menu built the hype, the lunch tacos solidified Tacodeli as an Austin icon.

Tacodeli’s lunchtime lineup blends Mexican tradition with creative global inspiration – a preview of the taco fusion culture that would eventually sweep the country.

    Some favorites include:

These tacos show why Tacodeli continues to feel fresh after more than two decades – they innovate without losing the soul of the taco.

    The Salsa Obsession Is Real

No Tacodeli meal is complete without a selection of their iconic salsas.

    The must-try lineup:

“Salsa Doña” in particular has practically become its own Austin celebrity fans buy it by the bottle.

In a world where tacos have gone global Tacodeli remains the perfect example of how to innovate while respecting the roots.
Tacodeli represents the best of what taco culture can be: inclusive, imaginative, community-driven, and always delicious.

If tacos are the heart of Austin, Tacodeli is one of its strongest beats. With flavorful menus, iconic salsas, and a commitment to quality that never wavered, they’ve earned their place as a Texas classic – and a national taco inspiration.

Whether you’re a breakfast taco loyalist or a lunchtime taco explorer, Tacodeli is the kind of spot that makes every Tuesday (and every day) worth celebrating.

The Science of Why People Love Tacos

            By PDub

Tacos are a staple for so many of us. Whether it’s Taco Tuesday, late-night craving, or that perfect bite dripping with spicy sauce, tacos have an undeniable hold on our hearts (and taste buds). But have you ever wondered why we love them so much? Turns out, science has some delicious answers.

            1. The Brain Loves Contrast

Tacos are a symphony of opposites soft meets crunchy, hot meets cool, spicy meets creamy. That explosion of texture and temperature keeps your brain lit up like a celebration. Neuroscientists call it sensory contrast, and it triggers a wave of dopamine, the brain’s pleasure chemical. Every bite becomes an adventure.

            2. Flavor Layering: A Perfect Bite Every Time

Each element of a taco hits a different part of your taste map salt from the cheese, umami from the meat, acid from lime, and sweetness from veggies. Together, they create flavor synergy a harmony of tastes that’s more powerful together than any one ingredient alone. It’s chemistry on a tortilla.

            3. The Freedom of Choice

Building your taco is a tiny act of creativity. Corn or flour, carne asada or cauliflower, mild or extra hot every decision personalizes your experience. Studies show that people feel more satisfied when they have control over their food. With tacos, every bite is a reflection of you.

            4. Shared Joy and Social Bonding

There’s something special about gathering around tacos. They’re fun, casual, and meant to be shared. Eating together releases oxytocin — the “connection hormone” — making Taco Tuesday more than a meal; it’s a moment of togetherness. No wonder tacos have become a symbol of community.

            5. The Balance of Flavor and Freshness

Tacos are the perfect blend of indulgence and lightness. Savory meats or veggies layered with fresh toppings and zesty lime — they satisfy your cravings without leaving you weighed down. That balance gives you all the pleasure with none of the guilt, making tacos a repeat favorite for both body and soul.

            6. The Celebration in Every Bite

From their roots in Mexican street food to global fame, tacos have always been about celebration. They carry the spirit of fiestas, family, and joy. When you associate food with positive emotion, your brain literally enhances flavor perception, tacos taste better when you’re happy.

            7. The Magic of Eating with Your Hands

Eating tacos engages more than your taste buds it’s a full sensory experience. The warmth of the tortilla, the texture of the filling, the aroma of spices — it all connects you to the food in a primal, satisfying way. Science shows that eating with your hands can actually make food taste richer and more fulfilling.

So Why Do We Love Tacos?

Because they’re everything our senses, hearts, and minds crave, variety, connection, and joy all wrapped in a tortilla.
Tacos are a science-backed reason to smile.

Celebrate your next Taco Tuesday like a scientist of happiness – one perfect bite at a time.

Spirit of the Sun: The Spiritual History of Tequila

From the volcanic highlands of Jalisco to cocktail bars around the world, tequila is a story distilled from earth, fire, and centuries of tradition. Long before it filled crystal glasses and salted rims, tequila began as a sacred spirit, intertwined with the ancient beliefs of Mexico’s first civilizations.

The Agave: A Gift from the Gods

Tequila’s story starts with the agave, a resilient desert plant revered by the peoples of ancient Mesoamerica. Known as maguey to the Aztecs, the agave provided food, fiber, and most importantly, a sacred beverage called pulque, a fermented drink made from its sweet sap.

Pulque wasn’t a casual refreshment. It was a ritual drink, consumed by priests and nobility during ceremonies dedicated to fertility, harvest, and the gods. It symbolized life’s renewal, flowing from a plant that thrived under the intense Mexican sun.

According to legend, the goddess Mayahuel often depicted with agave leaves sprouting from her body was the divine embodiment of the maguey plant. Stories tell that after her tragic death, her spirit transformed into agave, allowing her gift to sustain humanity. Her husband, Patecatl, was said to be the god of pulque and medicine, linking agave to both healing and celebration.

            From Lightning to Liquor

One popular tale says that the first agave spirit was born when a bolt of lightning struck an agave plant, cooking it and releasing its sweet, fermented nectar a “gift from the heavens.” While mythic, this story poetically captures the elements that make tequila what it is: earth, fire, and transformation.

Historically, the real transformation came in the 16th century, when Spanish colonists introduced distillation techniques to Mexico. Indigenous people had already mastered fermentation through pulque, but distillation allowed them to concentrate the spirit and with that innovation, mezcal and later tequila were born.

The first documented production of what we now call tequila occurred in Jalisco, near the town of Tequila, where volcanic soil and high-altitude climate created ideal conditions for growing blue agave (Agave tequilana Weber).

The Sun, the Spirit, and the Symbolism

Though there’s no record of tequila being a literal “sun worship” beverage, it’s impossible to ignore the solar symbolism that runs through its story. The agave thrives in sun-scorched landscapes, storing light and heat within its core and distillation, the process that transforms it into spirit, mirrors the alchemy of sunlight into liquid gold.

For ancient cultures, the sun represented life and vitality; for modern Mexico, tequila represents heritage and endurance warmth shared among friends, generations, and nations.

Every pour of tequila carries that duality: ancient reverence and modern joy, sacred history and everyday celebration.

Tequila Today: Legacy in Every Glass

Today, tequila is protected by Denomination of Origin laws, meaning it can only be produced in certain regions of Mexico. It remains deeply tied to its roots both literally and culturally. The art of harvesting, roasting, fermenting, and distilling agave is still performed by jimadores (agave farmers), whose skill and intuition continue traditions passed down through generations.

From the goddess Mayahuel to the volcanic fields of Jalisco, tequila’s journey reflects Mexico’s soul a spirit of resilience, transformation, and light.

So next time you sip a golden reposado or a crisp blanco, raise your glass to the sun and to the centuries of devotion, mythology, and craftsmanship that made it possible.

            Salud.

The World’s Most Expensive Taco: A $25,000 Gold-Infused Culinary Masterpiece

Somewhere between the streets of Mexico City and the penthouse suites of Cabo, the humble taco took a vacation… and came back wearing gold

That’s not a metaphor the world’s most expensive taco truly sparkles. Priced at an unbelievable $25,000, this culinary gem is served exclusively at Grand Velas Los Cabos, one of Mexico’s most luxurious resorts.

This isn’t your average Tuesday night taco run it’s a once-in-a-lifetime indulgence that blurs the line between art, extravagance, and culinary passion.

            Inside the $25,000 Taco
The taco begins with a corn tortilla infused with 24-karat gold flakes, setting the tone for luxury from the very first bite.
Layered on top is a decadent combination of:
            A5 Kobe beef
            Maine lobster
            Black truffle brie cheese
            Almas Beluga caviar

And to tie it all together? A salsa made from dried morita chiles, ultra-aged añejo tequila, and civet coffee one of the rarest and most expensive coffees in the world.

This taco isn’t meant to be eaten in a hurry. It’s meant to be experienced. And for the ultimate pairing, guests can enjoy it with a bottle of Ley .925 Pasión Azteca Ultra-Premium Añejo Tequila, valued at around $150,000.

Why Would Anyone Pay That Much for a Taco?

Turning a taco into a luxury item isn’t about showing off; it’s about celebrating how something so universally loved can be elevated to art.

The $25,000 taco tells a story of transformation: the journey from humble street food to haute cuisine. It’s a culinary wink at the world saying, “We can make anything extraordinary even a taco.”

From Street Corners to Michelin Stars

The luxury taco trend is part of a bigger movement. Taquería El Califa de León in Mexico City recently became the first taco stand ever to earn a Michelin Star, solidifying tacos as fine-dining-worthy.

Chefs from Los Angeles to Tokyo are experimenting with foie gras tacos, truffle aioli fillings, and champagne-infused tortillas, proving that the taco has no creative ceiling.

Luxury doesn’t replace authenticity it expands it. From a $2 street taco to a $25,000 gold one, tacos remain what they’ve always been: pure happiness wrapped in a tortilla.

Luxury doesn’t have to mean a high price tag. It can mean the smell of warm tortillas, the squeeze of lime, the crunch of the first bite. It’s the atmosphere, the experience, and the connection you share. Because maybe the most luxurious taco isn’t the one that costs $25,000 it’s the one shared with your favorite people.

Why Is Cinco de Mayo Celebrated More in the U.S. Than Mexico?

In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is mainly observed in Puebla with military parades and reenactments. It’s a local celebration, not a national holiday.

In the United States, however, Cinco de Mayo evolved into a broader celebration of Mexican-American culture, especially in communities like Los Angeles, San Diego, Houston, and Chicago. By the 20th century, it became a way to:

In the 1980s and 1990s, U.S. brands helped commercialize the day, turning it into a popular event centered around festive gatherings, colorful décor, and yes — tacos and margaritas.

🌮 How to Celebrate Cinco de Mayo Respectfully
Cinco de Mayo is a joyful day — but it’s also one with deep cultural roots. Here are some fun and thoughtful ways to honor it:
Learn the history (you already are — yay!)
Support local Mexican restaurants and artisans
Try traditional dishes like mole poblano (which originated in Puebla), tacos al pastor, or tamales
Enjoy music and dance, like Mariachi, Banda, and Folklórico
Celebrate Mexican contributions to U.S. culture, past and present

And of course — gather with friends, raise a glass, and toast to courage, community, and culture.

Jarritos® Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with ‘Los Sabores De Mi México’

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Jarritos® proudly presents the second edition of Los Sabores De Mi México—a cultural experience that highlights the rich flavors and vibrant heritage of Mexico. This event will take place from October 3rd to 6th, 2024, at Ovation Hollywood, running daily from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

Los Sabores De Mi México will bring to life the magic of Mexican cuisine with a special focus on the recipes of iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1907-1954). Attendees will embark on a sensory journey through food and art, with a showcase that includes a replica of the Kahlo family home and kitchen. This experience allows visitors to connect deeply with Frida Kahlo’s world, discovering not only her artistic genius but also the culinary traditions that shaped her life.

                      Kahlo family home and kitchen

A highlight of the event is the presentation of an exclusive book featuring treasured Kahlo family recipes. “It is a great honor to share a part of our heritage and our family’s history with the world,” said Mara Romeo Kahlo, Frida Kahlo’s grandniece. “We believe the kitchen is the heart of the home, and through this book, we are presenting a collection of gastronomic art and cultural pieces from Frida’s time in a simple, everyday, and fun way.” Chef Mónica Patiño, who curated the recipes, adds, “This book connects us with the woman and the family, offering a glimpse into daily life at Fridas home in Coyoacán. It brings her handwritten recipes to life, reflecting her deep connection with traditional Mexican cuisine.”

The exhibition will also feature previously unseen photographs that capture intimate moments of the Kahlo family, allowing visitors to delve into the personal life of this cultural icon. In addition, ten monumental Frida sculptures, created by contemporary Mexican artists, will pay tribute to her enduring influence in both the art and culinary worlds.

National Taco Day Officially Moves To Tuesday Every Year!

The latest milestone in Taco Bell’s ongoing Taco Tuesday journey moves this year’s National Taco Day from 10/4 to 10/1 and ensures the celebration will always fall on the first Tuesday of October

Mark your calendars because National Taco Day is getting a new date thanks to the efforts of Taco Bell and support from National Day Calendar. As it stood, National Taco Day was annually celebrated on October 4, making the odds of a combined National Taco Day and Taco Tuesday an epically joyous rarity. To right this wrong, Taco Bell has worked tirelessly with the powers that be, in this case National Day Calendar, to move the National Taco Day recognition to fall solely on Tuesdays henceforth. The change will officially take place in 2024, moving National Taco Day from Friday, October 4 to Tuesday, October 1.

                      The Official Day Calendar

                      Official Taco Day Calendar

                      National Taco Day

Giving taco fans what they want, National Day Calendar and Taco Bell officially move National Taco Day to the first (Taco) Tuesday in October annually.

Since 2013, National Day Calendar has been the original and authoritative entity curating, registering and celebrating national days, weeks, months and international days. Changes in the calendar, while not impossible, are a rarity.

“For years, we’ve celebrated National Taco Day on October 4th, but it’s always felt like there was a bigger opportunity to align it with something even more special—Taco Tuesday,” said Marlo Anderson, founder of National Day Calendar. “Thanks to Taco Bell’s efforts, we’re excited to officially move National Taco Day to the first Tuesday in October, creating the Taco Tuesday of all Taco Tuesdays. National Day Calendar has always thrived on the grassroots support of people who love celebrating these moments, and this change is a perfect example of that. It’s more than just moving a date—it’s about bringing taco lovers together in a bigger way, and we couldn’t be more excited!”

The History of National Taco Day

National Taco Day began much earlier than the modernized and marketed celebration we know today. According to Gustavo Arellano, author of the 2012 book “Tacos USA: How Mexican Food Conquered America”, its origin can be dated back to the 1960’s in San Antonio, Texas from Roberto L. Gomez, Esq. While the celebration eventually grew from a day to a week, to eventually a month, National Taco Day was locally celebrated on May 3, celebrating the week leading up to Cinco de Mayo. While it was honored in some local areas, it sadly faded away and it wasn’t until 2009 when several businesses rallied behind a new day to mark the occasion, October 4. With the rise of internet culture, the popularity caught on and by 2013, National Taco Day cemented itself on the National Day Calendar to be celebrated on October 4.

                      Enter Taco Bell…

                      Why the Move? Why Now?

Since the turn of the century, only four times has National Taco Day landed on a Tuesday. Year over year, social conversations continue to rise around the discrepancy. Both Taco Bell and National Day Calendar have taken notice and decided to take action. Prior to Taco Bell’s efforts to free Taco Tuesday, a move like this would have had potential legal repercussions.

                      Taco Bell’s Taco Tuesday History

This isn’t Taco Bell’s first foray in taking bold actions in the name of Taco Tuesday lovers. The brand has a storied history dating back to early last year, when it filed legal petitions on May 16, 2023 to cancel the trademark registrations, liberating them for all to use. After six months of fighting the good fight, the phrase was officially liberated on October 24, 2023 in all 50 states.

“When we liberated Taco Tuesday last year, we did it for all who make, sell, eat and celebrate tacos; but we couldn’t just stop there,” said Taco Bell’s Chief Marketing Officer, Taylor Montgomery. “With National Taco Day coming up, it felt unnatural for it to not fall on a Tuesday, and as some of the biggest advocates of Taco Tuesday out there, we knew we had to help shift the holiday permanently to give taco makers and lovers the opportunity to celebrate bigger and better every year.”

Celebrate National Taco Day Like Never Before

To celebrate the momentous move of National Taco Day to its rightful home – Taco Tuesday – Taco Bell is planning a frenzy of Tuesday Drop celebrations kicking off on October 1 and continuing all month long. Fans are encouraged to mark the new date on their calendars, sign up for Taco Bell Rewards* and follow along on social channels to stay up to date on more celebration details being announced closer to the holiday.

Celebrate Michelada Day in Santa Ana Today!

Introducing Travel Santa Ana’s Michelada Guide (Santa Ana Michelada Guide | Travel Santa Ana)

If you’re new to the world of Micheladas, here’s the scoop: In its most basic form, the drink is a Mexican lager dialed up with tart lime juice and served in a chilled, salt-rimed glass. Creative bartenders have been playing with the formula for years, adding assorted sauces, chiles, and spices.

Credit for the drink’s invention is usually given to a man named Michel Ésper, who frequented Club Deportivo Potosino in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. In the 1960s, Ésper started ordering his beer with lime, salt, ice, and a straw in a cup called a “chabela.” Curious members of the club began asking for the drink as “Michel’s lemonade,” which was shortened over time to Michelada.

                      Micheladas and charcuterie

Today, Santa Ana restaurants and bars are offering their own versions of the Michelada, from housemade Michelada mix to mocktail options with Topo Chico or assorted fruit juices.

Indulge in a thoughtful curated variety of options listed in Travel Santa Ana’s Michelada Guide today! Salud!

Taco Bell is Hosting Taco Tuesday Celebrations to Empower Local Food Vendors in Los Angeles

For the second consecutive year, Taco Bell is partnering with fellow southern California innovator Revolution Carts to support local entrepreneurs at three Ave 26 Family Night Market events on various Taco Tuesdays this summer. For decades, Taco Bell has been inspired by Hispanic and Latin cuisines, so this is a continuation of its commitment to intentionally supporting and uplifting the communities behind that inspiration.

                      Supporting Food Culture Entrepreneurs
Mobile vendors are a staple in the bustling food scene of Taco Bell’s backyard in Southern California. Their tacos, tamales and other offerings are vehicles of innovative food fusions, helping contribute to the diverse flavors of the city. However, these hard-working vendors often face challenges to successfully operate their family-owned small businesses, like gaining access to regulation-compliant equipment, receiving permits, and even facing harassment.

Ever since liberating the Taco Tuesday trademark last year, Taco Bell has been on a mission to reduce the limitations so often found in making, selling or eating tacos — or any food. That’s why Taco Bell is building on its support from last year by gifting even more sidewalk-legal food vending carts through Revolution Carts’ efforts. After gifting 20 carts to SoCal food entrepreneurs last year, Taco Bell will be gifting 26 more new carts on multiple Taco Tuesday celebrations this summer.

Each cart will be health permit compliant and customized to feel like an extension of the vendors’ selves. The recipients will also receive valuable resources from Revolution Carts, such as access to safe vending locations and catered events, support to acquire proper permits and guidance on how to grow their businesses.

Taco Bell is expanding its support of local entrepreneurs by playing a major role in bringing the locally beloved Ave 26 Family Night Market back to Los Angeles for three summer nights of “Taco Tuesdays in the Arts District.” After originally growing its roots in Lincoln Heights, the market was required to relocate in 2021 to its current home at the Pico Rivera Sports Arena. However, with the support of Taco Bell, taco lovers can experience the night market’s inspiring community back in Los Angeles at the downtown Arts District on June 18, July 23 and August 13 from 5 p.m. – 10 p.m. PT at 860 Traction Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90013.

“We’re proud to keep supporting street vendors and night markets here in Southern California, like Ave 26, where we’re seeing tradition meet innovation on the frontlines of food fusion,” says Taylor Montgomery, Chief Marketing Officer at Taco Bell. “Street food creativity and culture continues to inspire us at Taco Bell as we evolve our own menu, and we’re excited to continue engaging with these entrepreneurs in more ways.”

This year’s Taco Bell-backed recipients of Revolution Carts will receive their new carts at each of the three Ave 26 Family Night Market events. The events will feature food vendors, music, art and the opportunity to hear the cart recipients’ unique stories.

“Our organization is motivated to advocate and support the mobile food economy and their people, and by partnering with Taco Bell we are able to increase our reach of support,” says Richard Gomez, Chief Engineer at Revolution Carts. “These vendors give their customers their best every day, and it is important that we give back to them as well to show our appreciation for all their services and sacrifices they make to serve us.”

By supporting these local vendors, Taco Bell is bringing more awareness to resource limitations and the obstacles that these entrepreneurs face. Once the vendors are equipped with the necessary equipment and permits, they can focus on growing their businesses and serving delicious, flavorful food to their community.

Get to Know a Few of the First 2024 Taco Bell x Revolution Carts Recipients
Each recipient is highly motivated to expand their business and was chosen for their unique food innovation — values that Taco Bell embodies.

Tacos de Canasta N&R, led by Nelson Hernandez: Nelson recently started this business after losing his job due to the pandemic. He saw a lack of tacos de canasta, also known as basket tacos, in his local food scene, so he brought the traditional Mexican dish to his SoCal community. His new cart will help his family expand the burgeoning business and ease current logistical challenges.

Cornkarts, led by Lizbet Salas Perez: Lizbet’s recipes have been handed down through her family for decades, if not centuries. Her menu ranges from a chileatole soup that her grandfather would ask for as a special birthday dish to champurrado, a chocolate-based hot drink. Seeing food as a window to showcasing the culinary aspects of her Mexican heritage, she’ll use her new cart to celebrate her culture with even more people.

Black Cornman LA, led by Andrew Johnson: Andrew sells elotes, hotdogs, tacos and more. He has been a vendor in LA for over five years, with additional experience hosting private events across the city. His new cart will remove his prior permitting worries and help him advance his approach of working with purpose, aiming for his recipes to bring people together.

River North Taco Tuesday Crawl June 25th

The River North Taco Tuesday Crawl will feature three taco spots: XOCO, Bodega Taqueria y Tequila, and Mercadito. Guests will have a chance to choose from savory tacos, churros, and cocktails. The Taco Tuesday experience awaits on June 25th from 6pm to 9pm.
