Three tequilas in one glass is either genius or a joke, and Texas Roadhouse commits to the bit hard enough that it works. The Legendary Margarita layers blanco, reposado, and añejo – three tequilas at three ages – plus a real orange liqueur and fresh lime, and finishes on a black lava salt rim. It’s a novelty drink with real depth.

Ingredients

  • ¾ oz blanco tequila
  • ¾ oz reposado tequila
  • ¾ oz añejo tequila
  • 1 oz Cointreau
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • ½ oz agave syrup (or simple syrup)
  • Black lava salt (or coarse sea salt), for the rim
  • Lime wedge, for garnish
  • Ice

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Rocks glass or margarita glass
  • Small plate for salt
  • Jigger

Method

  • Rim the glass. Run a lime wedge around the rim of a rocks glass, then dip into black lava salt. Fill with fresh ice.
  • Combine in shaker. Add all three tequilas, Cointreau, fresh lime juice, and agave syrup to a shaker with ice.
  • Shake hard. 10–15 seconds. The shaker should be very cold.
  • Strain and pour over fresh ice.
  • Garnish with a lime wedge on the rim.

Bartender’s notes

  • The three-tequila blend is real, not marketing. Blanco gives citrus edge, reposado gives soft vanilla and oak, añejo gives warmth and body. Together they build a fuller flavor than any single tequila at any age could hit. You feel it on the finish.
  • If you don’t want to open three bottles, use 2¼ oz of reposado alone. You’ll get 85% of the way there. This is a fine shortcut for a single drink.
  • Black lava salt is showy but genuinely different. The mineral note plays with the agave in a way plain kosher salt doesn’t. Widely available at grocery stores now; a small bottle lasts forever. Coarse sea salt is a fine sub.
  • Agave over simple syrup. The whole drink is tequila-forward. Agave syrup echoes that; simple syrup dilutes it. Use agave if you have it.
  • Fresh lime, not sour mix. Texas Roadhouse’s version is a fresh-lime drink. Sour mix here would flatten the three-tequila layering.

Scaling for a pitcher

For a pitcher that serves 6:

  • 4½ oz blanco tequila
  • 4½ oz reposado tequila
  • 4½ oz añejo tequila
  • 6 oz Cointreau
  • 6 oz fresh lime juice
  • 3 oz agave syrup

Combine in a pitcher without ice, refrigerate. Shake individual servings with fresh ice. Rim each glass individually – black lava salt loses its texture in a pre-batched setup.

Frequently asked

Do I really need all three tequilas? Yes for authenticity, no for a good drink. If you only have reposado, use 2¼ oz of that and skip the split-base thing. It’ll still be a great margarita.

What tequila brands does Texas Roadhouse actually use? The restaurant doesn’t publish this. My recommendation for the copycat: Espolòn Blanco, Milagro Reposado, and Herradura Añejo – all widely available, all 100% agave, all under $40 a bottle.

Where do I find black lava salt? Any well-stocked grocery store’s spice aisle, or online. It’s often labeled “Hawaiian black lava salt.” A small jar runs $6–$10 and lasts a year.

Can I use bottled lime juice? No. This drink is built on tequila and citrus balance – bottled lime juice tastes metallic against three tequilas and will wreck the whole thing.

How strong is this drink? About 3¼ oz of liquor per glass. It drinks smoother than that math suggests because the three tequilas balance each other. Still – two of these is plenty for one Tuesday.
