Santa Ana’s Michelada Guide: A Celebration of Bold Flavors and Local Creativity

Get ready to embark on a flavorful journey through Santa Ana’s vibrant Michelada scene with the Santa Ana Michelada Guide! Travel Santa Ana’s curated list highlights some of the best and most creative takes on the iconic Mexican cocktail, showcasing the city’s diverse and innovative mixology.

If you’re new to the world of Micheladas, here’s the scoop: The drink traditionally consists of a refreshing Mexican lager enhanced with tart lime juice, served in a chilled, salt-rimmed glass. Over the years, inventive bartenders have elevated the classic recipe by incorporating a variety of sauces, chiles, and spices to create unique flavor profiles.

The origins of the Michelada date back to the 1960s in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. Credit for its creation is often given to Michel Ésper, a regular at Club Deportivo Potosino, who would request his beer with lime, salt, ice, and a straw in a special cup called a “chabela.” Club members started referring to the drink as “Michel’s lemonade,” which was eventually shortened to the now-iconic name, Michelada.

Today, Santa Ana’s restaurants and bars serve up their own versions of the Michelada. From house-made mixes to mocktail variations with Topo Chico, sparkling water, or fresh fruit juices, there’s a Michelada for everyone to enjoy.

To make it easier for locals and visitors to experience these delicious concoctions, Travel Santa Ana has put together the Santa Ana Michelada Guide, featuring a handpicked selection of two dozen establishments.

“Unlike other cities with margarita trails, we set out to celebrate Santa Ana’s rich Hispanic heritage in a way that’s truly our own—by highlighting this iconic beverage that holds a special place in our community,” said Wendy Haase-Roberts, President & CEO, Travel Santa Ana.
