Red Sangria

Summer is synonymous with vibrant colors, warm weather, and most importantly, refreshing drinks. One of the best ways to enjoy the summer season is by sipping on a chilled glass of Sangria. Originally from Spain, Sangria has become a favorite all around the world. It’s perfect blend of wine, fruit, and a touch of sweetness makes it the ultimate summer beverage. In this article, we’ll dive into a simple yet delightful Red Wine Sangria recipe that you can whip up for your next gathering.

A Bit About Sangria
Sangria is a Spanish drink made with red wine, chopped fruits, a sweetener, and a small amount of brandy or any other spirit. You can also find variations with white wine known as Sangria Blanca. Its name is derived from the Spanish word ‘sangre,’ which means blood, referencing the deep red color of the drink.

Ingredients
• 1 bottle of red wine (750 ml) (Spanish wine like Tempranillo, Garnacha is preferred)
• 1 orange, thinly sliced
• 1 lemon, thinly sliced
• 1 apple, cored and cut into thin wedges
• 1 to 2 cups of seasonal fruits (like berries, peaches, or pineapple)
• ¼ cup of brandy
• ¼ cup of sugar or honey (adjust to taste)
• 1 can of soda water or lemon-lime soda (optional for a bubbly version)
• Ice cubes
• Fresh mint leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions
• Prep the Fruit: Wash all the fruits properly. Thinly slice the orange and lemon and cut the apple into thin wedges. If you’re using other fruits like peaches or pineapples, cut them into bite-sized pieces.
• Mix Wine and Spirits: In a large pitcher, combine the red wine and brandy.
• Add Sweetness: Add sugar or honey to the pitcher. Stir well until the sugar is dissolved. Taste the mixture and adjust the sweetness according to your preference.
• Add Fruits: Add the sliced oranges, lemons, apples, and any other fruits you’re using to the pitcher. Stir to combine.
• Chill: Cover the pitcher with plastic wrap or a lid and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight. This allows the flavors to meld together. The longer it sits, the more flavorful it will be.
• Serve: Before serving, if you want to add some bubbles to your Sangria, pour in the soda water or lemon-lime soda. Fill glasses with ice and pour the Sangria over the ice. You can also add some of the soaked fruits into the glasses.
• Garnish and Enjoy: Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint, if desired. Serve immediately and enjoy your refreshing Red Wine Sangria!

This Red Wine Sangria is not only easy to make, but it’s also incredibly versatile. Feel free to experiment with different fruits, adjust the sweetness, or even try different types of wine. Remember, the key to the perfect Sangria is allowing it to chill long enough for all the flavors to come together. So, raise your glass and toast to the joys of summer with this delectable drink. Cheers!
