Gingerbread Churros Recipe

Ingredients

For the Churros

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground cloves
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 large egg
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

For the Gingerbread Sugar Coating

  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground ginger
  • ¼ tsp ground cloves

Instructions

Prepare the dough
In a medium saucepan, bring water, sugar, salt, and butter to a boil. Reduce heat to low and stir in flour and spices until a smooth dough forms and pulls away from the sides.

Cool & add egg
Remove from heat and let cool for 5 minutes. Stir in the egg until fully incorporated and smooth.

Heat the oil
Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan to 350°F.

Pipe & fry
Transfer dough to a piping bag fitted with a star tip. Pipe 4-6 inch strips directly into hot oil. Fry until golden brown, about 2–3 minutes per side.

Coat in sugar
Remove churros and drain briefly on paper towels. While warm, roll in gingerbread sugar mixture.

Optional Dipping Sauces

  • Chocolate ganache
  • Caramel sauce
  • Vanilla glaze
  • Spiced chocolate tequila sauce (for adults)
