Fig & Thyme Tequila Smash: A Fresh September Cocktail

September 1, 2026
Cocktails in crystal glasses garnished with fig halves and thyme, with sliced figs on a marble surface in the background.

September is that delicious in-between season when we’re not quite ready to say goodbye to summer, but the first flavors of fall are starting to call. Enter the Fig & Thyme Tequila Smash. Fresh figs bring a soft, jammy sweetness; thyme adds an aromatic herbal note, and tequila keeps everything bright and lively. Finished with fresh lemon and a touch of agave, it’s sophisticated enough for a dinner party but easy enough to make for Taco Tuesday. And while we will always love a margarita, sometimes Tuesday deserves a little plot twist.

Why Figs and Tequila Work So Well Together

Figs are naturally rich and honeyed without being overly sweet, which makes them a surprisingly good match for the earthy, peppery character of tequila. Fresh thyme adds another layer without overpowering the fruit, while lemon brings enough acidity to keep the cocktail crisp and balanced. The result tastes like September in a glass: a little bit summer, a little bit fall and completely ready for Taco Tuesday.

Fig & Thyme Tequila Smash

Makes 1 cocktail
Ingredients

  • 2 oz blanco tequila
  • 1 fresh ripe fig, quartered
  • 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 oz agave nectar
  • 2 sprigs fresh thyme, plus more for garnish
  • 1/2 oz orange liqueur, optional
  • Ice
  • Fresh fig half or slice, for garnish

Instructions

  • Add the quartered fig, agave nectar and leaves from one sprig of thyme to a cocktail shaker.
  • Gently muddle until the fig releases its juices.
  • Add the tequila, fresh lemon juice, orange liqueur if using, and plenty of ice. Shake vigorously for about 15 seconds.
  • Double strain into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice for a smoother cocktail, or strain normally if you like a little fig texture.
  • Garnish with a fresh fig and sprig of thyme.

TacoTuesday.com Tip: Give the thyme a gentle slap between your palms before adding it as a garnish. It releases the herb’s aroma so you smell the thyme with every sip.

Make It a Margarita

Want to bring it a little closer to familiar Taco Tuesday territory?
Add the optional orange liqueur and serve it in a salt-rimmed glass. You can also swap the traditional salt rim for a very light sea salt and cinnamon-sugar rim for a more autumn-inspired version.

What Tacos Should You Serve With It?

This cocktail has enough personality to stand up to richer tacos, but the fresh lemon and herbs also make it surprisingly versatile.
Try it with carnitas tacos, where the fig’s sweetness plays against the savory pork; grilled chicken tacos with fresh herbs and avocado; or goat cheese and roasted vegetable tacos for an unexpected meatless pairing.
For something particularly fun, make fig part of the meal too: grilled steak tacos with caramelized onions, crumbled queso fresco and a spoonful of fresh fig salsa.

The Perfect September Sip

There will be plenty of time for cinnamon, apples and all the cozy flavors of fall.
For now, we’re keeping one foot firmly planted in summer.
Fresh figs. Fragrant thyme. Good tequila. A little sunshine.
And, preferably, a plate of tacos nearby.
Consider your Tuesday upgraded.
