Brunch season doesn’t fade with the summer sun, it just trades poolside spritzes for bold savory spices and dramatic Halloween flair. While vodka usually claims Sunday mornings, autumn Taco Tuesdays demand something with more backbone, smokiness, and agave character.

Enter the Extra Bloody Maria, the fifth installment in our Fall Tequila Cocktail Series.

Served up in eerie glass skull mugs, this savory stunner swaps out standard vodka for peppery Blanco or earthy Reposado tequila. We amplify the classic base with rich tomato juice, Mexican hot sauce, smoky chipotle, Worcestershire, fresh lime, and prepared horseradish for a fiery kick that wakes the dead. Crowned like a spooky charcuterie board with leafy celery, sliced cured meats, briny olives, cornichons, and peeled hard-boiled egg whites masquerading as eyeballs, this is brunch with a wickedly savory bite.

The Extra Bloody Maria

Prep time: 7 minutes
Yield: 1 serving (easily scaled for skull mug pairs)

Ingredients

  • 2 oz 100% Agave Tequila (Blanco for clean vegetal pepper, or Reposado for a richer, rounded oak profile)
  • 4 oz Tomato Juice or Clamato (chilled)
  • ¾ oz Fresh Lime Juice
  • ½ oz Pickle or Olive Brine (for that craveable salty punch)
  • 2–3 dashes Mexican Hot Sauce (Valentina, Cholula, or Tapatío)
  • 2 dashes Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 tsp Prepared Horseradish (adjust for sinus-clearing heat)
  • Pinch of Celery Salt & Fresh Cracked Black Pepper
  • Ice Cubes

For the “Monster” Skewer Garnish:

  • Leafy green celery stalk
  • Wooden cocktail skewer
  • Peeled mini mozzarella ball or halved small hard-boiled egg white (the “eyeball”)
  • Black olive (the “pupil”)
  • Cornichon or crinkle-cut dill pickle slice
  • Slices of cured salami or chorizo folded like ruffled ribbons
  • Fresh lime wedges
  • Glass skull mug or tall jar

Instructions

  • Build the Flavor: In a shaker tin or mixing glass (without ice), combine the tequila, tomato juice, lime juice, pickle brine, hot sauce, Worcestershire, horseradish, celery salt, and black pepper.
  • Roll, Don’t Shake: Fill the glass skull mug generously with clean ice cubes. Add ice to your shaker and “roll” the mixture back and forth between tins 3 to 4 times to chill thoroughly without whipping up excessive froth or over-diluting the tomato juice.
  • The Pour: Strain or pour the rich crimson mixture directly into the ice-filled skull mug.
  • Assemble the Spooky Skewer: Thread folded salami ribbons, a cornichon, a black olive, and the mozzarella/egg eyeball onto a bamboo cocktail pick.
  • Garnish & Serve: Nest a tall, leafy stalk of celery into the side of the skull and lay your loaded savory skewer directly across the rim. Serve with lime wedges on the side and dig in!

Taco Pairing Tip:
This bold, umami-rich cocktail craves savory breakfast and lunch tacos. Pair it with Chorizo & Egg Breakfast Tacos, Crispy Carnitas Hash, or cheesy Birria Tacos where the horseradish heat and acidic tomato cut right through the rich, savory fat.
