23 Under-The-Radar Tampa Bay Taco Spots

23 under-the-radar Tampa Bay taco spots you need to try before you die

By Alexandria Jones at cltampa.com

When it comes to tacos, Tampa Bay has some very classic, well-known haunts. But there are also smaller spots with some cult followings that deserve a little shine. A few of these these taquerias, food trucks, and cafes are easy to miss, but they’re hawking some of the best tacos in town. From secret gas stations tacos, to lesser-known chains, to up-coming, fusion-fueled twists, you certainly have your work cut out for you.

Ranchero Tacos

4901 N Florida Ave, Tampa, 813-495-2635
Get ready for perfection. While it boasts a smaller menu with most of the usual suspects, simple street tacos are the move here. Tortillas are pressed to order and toasted on the flat top, no double up required. Carnitas are juicy and crispy all in one, with the extra unctuousness that comes with a slow cook in fat. The pineapple adorning the al pastor sees some time on the flat top as well, giving it that extra bit of caramelized sweetness. The chorizo comes with a lovely dose of baking spice that keeps it from being too smokey. And if you’re feeling adventurous, the lengua (beef tongue) is so perfectly tender it melts in your mouth. Don’t sleep on the tamales it offers on weekends!—Daniel Guess

Mayra’s Tacos at Cinco Soccer

5305 Henry Ave., Tampa
Sheltered in a shack behind a soccer field the Michocán native prides herself on the no-frills menu with an affordable price tag. Four for $10 tacos can be enjoyed with a smooth cerveza from the Cinco clubhouse a few steps away. Don’t skip the torta either. —Ray Roa

La Taqueria El Nopal

8307 N Dale Mabry Hwy., Tampa, 813-679-8609
Whether you’re depositing funds at the PNC Bank or getting an oil change at the Jiffy Lube, reward yourself for adulting with a sope, quesadilla, or nopales.

A New York City Newsstand Turned Into An Indian Taco Restaurant

By Gary Stern

The fast-service restaurant Taco Mahal started because of the owner’s father’s newsstand. And that’s not a misprint.

After Danikkah Josan’s father said he was ready to shutter his compact 200-square-foot newsstand near busy Sheraton Square in the West Village of Manhattan after 30 years, she urged him not to give up his lease. “Don’t cancel it,” Josan told him, “I have an idea for a restaurant that combines Indian food with Mexican tacos.”

Josan, who was 26 at the time (and is now 29), developed a business plan. She majored in business administration at Texas A&M and had been working at Capital One Finance in Texas. But her dad had also owned an Indian restaurant in Greenwich Village, Rangoli, which exposed her to the restaurant business including equipment companies and food suppliers.

Where to Find 3 Oak Cliff Taco Spots That Aren’t Listed on Yelp

By Brian Reinhart – Dallas Observer

During Hidden Gems Week, the Observer food and drink writers are celebrating an abundance of diverse, delicious restaurants and bars around Dallas, places that don’t often (or ever) get mentioned by big-name food media, trendsetters, bloggers or chefs. We’re taking you outside of the ordinary to help you discover something new.

Dallas is one of the hottest, most thriving Mexican food cities in the United States. Just about every neighborhood has a great taco restaurant, and south of the Trinity River, there are dozens. Some of them you know about. Trompo received national attention from Bon Appetit magazine; Tacos Mariachi was the Observer’s Best Taqueria of 2016; El Si Hay, a few blocks from Bishop Arts, has had a strong cult of fans for years and the ever-present line to prove it; the new Maskaras Mexican Grill got a lot of attention for its lucha libre-themed atmosphere.

But many of Oak Cliff’s taco joints don’t have such a following yet. Some of them aren’t listed on Yelp or Google Maps. We hate to betray some of the neighborhood’s best-kept secrets, but it’s our job — and these are small businesses, so revealing a “secret” spot means helping the owners find new customers and pay the bills. That’s a good cause.

Here’s your guide to three taquerias and Mexican restaurants in Oak Cliff that you won’t find on Yelp, along with suggested orders and, in some cases, what to avoid.

The L.A. Taco 69: The Tacos That Define Los Angeles, Mapped

CESAR HERNANDEZ

This list is presented by Tecate, the official beer of L.A. TACO

Eating tacos in Los Angeles has changed considerably. Over the last decade, more and more regional style taquerías found an audience. Birria is no longer just a special occasion dish, TJ-style tacos continue to have long lines, the crispy taco had a much-needed resurgence, corn tortillas were revolutionized, and unforgettable flour tortilla tacos are no longer a rarity. While tacos are one of the most democratic and blue-collar foods, they can also be ephemeral and sophisticated—dictated by what’s in season. The taco is a many-faced god.

Depending on what part of L.A. you’re from, the kinds of tacos you’re exposed to are entirely about access and location. But since L.A. is such a transient city, you’re usually only a short drive away from your next amazing taco-eating experience.

The 10 Best Places to Eat Tacos in London

From Surrey Quays to London Fields, here’s where to get al pastor, barbacoa, baja fish — and more.

by Adam Coghlan and James Hansen  Updated Jul 29, 2021, 5:47pm BST

Additional writing from Andrew Leitch

Around 2016, it was declared that London was in the midst of a “taco revolution.” It was big and inaccurate talk. And yet, the reasoning behind it was somehow understandable. More than a revolution, it was simply the case that suddenly London had options for tacos, where all that had existed before were one or two standouts or the sub-par chain restaurant offerings that fed into a wildly inaccurate perception of Mexican food as “a blunt object… all mushed avocado and chilli and vinegary notes, wrapped up in flatbreads with ambitions above their station.” While LA, or even New York still has nothing to fear by way of competition, London’s newcomers have brought a nuanced look at what Mexican food means today and focus on quality that has helped to make things at least a little better.

And Southern California is home to some of the best—from roadside taquerias just north of the border to more formal restaurants where chefs take creative liberties with the contents of their tacos. Most of these restaurants are small, family-run spots with short and sweet menus. Many are known to excel at one particular kind of taco or have staple signatures and it’s generally best to go along with popular wisdom. But how you eat your taco—standing up, sitting down, in your car or hovering over it—is entirely up to you.

Here are nine picks for tacos across Southern California:   Let’s go >>

Birria and Brisket Tacos at Starr Barbecue

Starr Barbecue, with its brightly colored exterior and an interior packed with memorabilia from years gone by has all the makings of a classic Texas ’cue joint. Here you can find wedges of pan de campo—a cakelike cowboy bread baked in a Dutch oven—served with a heart-stopping mound of butter. And the barbecue comes wrapped in tortillas just as often as it’s served on a tray. It’s with these tacos that Starr truly shines.

Starr Barbecue excels when it focuses on its border roots, using fresh ingredients and beloved brands. The mac and cheese is made with Velveeta. Some snobby gourmets might turn up their noses at that, but Texans know that the traditional, comforting queso con chile dip requires Velveeta. Starr Barbecue also serves cheesy birria de res tacos with stewed brisket in a birria broth punctuated with ancho, pasilla, and guajillo chiles. Small cups of the strong-flavored consommé and a salsa roja whose spice flares up in the back of the throat are served alongside four tacos in a basket lined with red-and-white checkered paper. The tacos are fragrant, juicy, and oozing with mozzarella cheese, a common Mexican American substitute for expensive Oaxacan quesillo. Also, Gonzalez knows that traditional birria is made with goat. Goat is popular in the Valley, as butterflied, spit-roasted cabrito al pastor, but Gonzalez insists that because Starr is a barbecue joint that smokes brisket, brisket is what should be in her birria. I also liked the chewy, heartwarming charro beans served in a small Styrofoam cup.

smoked brisket tacos

The saucy smoked brisket tacos, nestled in house-made flour tortillas, are even better than the birria. The meat is juicy, while the sauce balances sweet and spice. Best of all is the flattened, rectangular burrito. Dark-spotted with swooshes of brown created from time on the flattop, the behemoth fits tightly into a 8¼-by-5¾-inch foil-lined Styrofoam meat tray. Cut into quadrants, the exposed interior shows the same saucy chopped brisket mixed with refried beans and mozzarella. The components work harmoniously in every bite.
